Comparison of different surgical techniques in the hepatic hydatid cyst management

Hydatidosis is a Zoonotic parasitic infection.

Man as an intermediate host is infected after ingesting ova.

The cysts are most commonly found in the liver and lungs.

Surgical treatment is still the procedure of choice, however due, to, various reasons patients often require combination of medical and surgical therapy.

The goal of the surgical treatment is evacuation of the cyst and management of the cavity.

Various methods, such as primary cyst closure omentoplasty, external drainage, marsupialization, complete cyst resection and hepatectomy were used for management on the residual cyst cavity.

In this retrospective study, files of 50 patients operated for hepatic hydatid cyst at Ahwaz university hospitals over a period of five years were reviewed Thirty-four were female and 16 male.

was the most common symptom in 48 out of 50.

The patients treated with the method of drainage stayed at the hospital for about 20 days, with omentoplasty 8.8 days and in the method of evacuation, washing and closure for 11.5 days.

It is concluded that omentoplasty was the procedure of choice for the obliteration of the residual cavity of uninfected and relatively inaccessible cysts and had a significant shorter hospitalization and postoperative complication rate.
