The exact etiology of BPH is not known. Method : In this retrospective study, we reviewed 632 patients hospitalized in urology department of Rasht Razi hospital from 1997 to 2001. Result : About 14.9% of all hospitalized patients in urology department had BPH.

The most frequent age group was 7th decade of their life (41.8%).

The most common complaints of the patients in order of frequency were : urinary retention 42.4%; urinary incontinence 4% and hematuria 1.7%.

According to laboratory results 4.1 % of patients had creatinine.

Nineteen (3%) patients had creatinine levels above 1.5 mg / dl and the remaining 613 had normal value.

According to pathological results 482 (82.4%) patients had benign prostatic hyperplasia, 77 (13.2%) had benign prostatic hyperplasia along with prostatitis, and in 26 (4.4%) prostatic carcinoma was seen. Conclusion : Like other reports our study shows that with increasing age, frequency of BPH is increased.
