Abstract EN

The study aimed to measure mental motivation of university students, expounding the significant differences at the level of mental motivation among the research samples according to the variables of gender (male/ female), field of study (scientific / humanity), and study grades (first grade/ fourth grade).

A sample was chosen randomly.

This sample included (405) male and female students during the year (2011-2012), from the 1st and 4th grade in scientific and humanity studies distributed over seven colleges in Mosul University.

The researchers relied on the California measure of mental motivation scale , prepared by (Giancarlo & Factions, 1998).

The validity of the scale was achieved by presenting it to a group of experts and the reliability of mental motivation scale has been found out by using Alpha- Cronbach method.

The results were treated by the SPSS package revealing the following: University students of both genders have a high level of mental motivation.

There are significant differences in mental motivation among the research samples due to gender variation.

i.e., (male / female) and in favour of males.

But the results did not show statistically significant differences in mental motivation among the research samples due to the variable of the field of study (scientific / humanity) and study classes (first grade/ fourth grade).

Stemming from the results, the researchers presented a set of recommendations and proposals.
