Abstract EN
In the present study, we evaluated the effect of metformin [MTF]on menstrual cycle, hormonal and metabolic profiles of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS].
In a prospective single blind clinical trial, forty patients were selected based on their clinical features and hormonal profiles.
All patients received metformin 500mg three times a day for three months.
At the end of treatment, in 12 patients, menses became regular [30%], 4 patients became pregnant [10%], 21 remained oligomenorrehic [52.5%], and 3 were excluded because of side effects of MTF [7.5%].
Among those patients whose menses became regular, 6 of them developed normal sonographic appearance.
MTF therapy had no special effect on hormonal profiles.
In conclusion we suggest MTF as the first line of therapy in PCOS for regulation of menstrual cycles.
