Abstract EN

This paper attempts to determine the Center of gravity of the population of the Sudan, since the 1983 census.

Cartographic methods of representation are developed by the author with the help of mathematical and statistical tools.

The aim ؛s to domonstrarte methods of monitoring and calculating, utilizable for population and land-use planning, thus allowing a fruitful discussion about the.

future of population in the Sudan.

The Paper discusses the following aspects: 1 - The mean center, the meanpoint, the centriod, the centre of gravity of balancing point.

2 - The balancing line.

3 - The equitable line.

4 - Gini’s concentration ratio.

5 - ^renz curve.

6 - Nucleous ecumen.

These are all indicatores in planning for population policy and land-use, as well as agricultural development and new settlements.

The philosophy of an optimum site for the political capital, and the broad lines for population redis- tribution was laid down.

Finally, an attempt is made to answer mathematically the question of “Cptimum Population It is expected that the importance of ،Jabal Ali will increase considerably with the continuous expansion of its industrial zone.

Some observers predict that it may become the “Hong Kong of the Gulf” after the termination of hos- tilities and the restoration of political and economic stability in the Gulf Region.

This with undoutedly lead to the reactivation of the movement of foreign trade and particulary re-export activities.

Investment should be allocated ٨؛ the com- ing years - to the development of the industrial zone of ،Jabal Ali, since this will step up the overall industrial development in the U.A.E., and the diversification of its sources of income.
