Abstract EN

The chief puropse of this study is to assess the volum and flow of movement of Arab nationals into Egypt,in addition to analyzing their evolution, spatial dislri-pution, and demographic characteristics.

Egyptian population censuses are evaluated as regads the reliability of recording details about Non-Egyptian nationals.

The defi-nition adopted concerning nationality is "a person's nationality is determined by his birth-place irrespective of any other connection with another country".

The volume of influx of Arab nationals into Egypt steadily increased from 1897 to 1927 to reach a climax of 2.5 % of total population of Egypt in 1927 .

This was followed later on by a marked decline .

Throughout, four flows of move-ment are chronologically traced as follows: ٠ The pre - 20th century flow, mainly from Syria, Morocco and The Sudan.

٠ The flow during the twenties was mainly from : Libya, Iraq and Palestine.

٠ The flow during the forties was mainly from the Arabianpeninsula, Jordan and Somalia.

* During the seventies a noticable influx from almost all the Arab states is recorded.

Six Arab states contribute some 74 % of the total number of immegrants, with Palestine leading the list, followed by Iraq with about 50 % of the total flow from both .

The two are followed by Sudan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Jordan respectively.

Cairo, Giza and Alexandria attract 78 % of the total volume with almost half of the movement heading to Cairo.

The urban cetres of Egypt monoplise a maximum of 88 % of the total number of immegrants.

As regards the occupational structore of the migrants, social and personal ser-vices, trade touristic es،ab]؛shmen،s, agriculture and manufacture could be respectively listed.

This represents a departare from the previous period when agriculture represent-ed the prevailing activity of the migrants.

The paper concludes by outlining the need for a well- planned demographic pol-icy to cope with the influx of Arab nationals into Egypt.
