Abstract EN

This research focuses on the warning formulas against harming Lihyanite inscriptions.

These inscriptions contain some formulas that worked as means of social control in the Lihyanite society in order to protect the property of others against tampering and vandalism.

Although there are plenty of studies that already dealt with some aspects of Lihyanite inscriptions, this aspect has not been studied yet.

As will be seen, this study reflects some elements of the Lihyanite religious and social thought.

At the level of religious thought, this study confirms the central position of the Du-Gabat among the Lihyanite gods.

So, even when there are some gods mentioned with him in an inscription, he is the only one to be asked to harm anyone who violates the inscription, unlike the Nabataean society, "curse” was not used as a mechanism to protect the inscriptions.

One question that may be asked then is does this mean that the Lihyanites did not believe in Du-Gabat’s ability to expel the aggressor fom mercy? In terms of social aspect, Fines were not used against aggressor similar to what we find in the Nabataean inscriptions.

Perhaps this indicates the lack of social control institutions in the Lihyanite society.
