This paper presents an adaptive nonlinear state observer to estimate the state of a binary distillation column in which the composition of the feed is assumed to be immeasurable and unknown.
In the proposed design it is assumed that there is an arbitrary number of trays and only three mole fraction measurements are used.
The stability of the nonlinear state observer is studied and proven using Lyapunov second method.
The simulation results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed state observer.
