English Abstract
The main goal of this research paper is to assess the viability of Islamic banking financial system compared to the conventional credit instruments and this through comparing the performance of both financial systems throughout a 5-year period that encompasses the crisis year 2008.
To do that, four main methods of analysis have be conducted; Descriptive analysis, T-Test statistics, Wilcoxon (Mann Witney) tests, and random effect regression analysis.
Three main conclusions are produced by this research.
First, Islamic banks tend to outperform conventional banks on the long term with respect to the profitability/efficiency aspect of performance.
Second, the performance of both groups in terms of liquidity and leverage/risk does not display any statistical difference.
In addition, the difference in performance between the two categories of banks has been diminishing during the crisis year 2008.
