English Abstract

Recent strand of literature has documented a strong link between media and corporate governance as well as between corporate governance and dividend payout ratio.

This paper aims to study the effect of media independence on dividend policy.

Using a data of media independence and dividend payout ratios from twenty three emerging markets, we show a significantly positive relationship between the two.

This relationship persists even after controlling for different country-level and firm-level characteristics.
