English Abstract

This paper studies the impact of corporate governance mechanisms on firm performance in the MENA region, i.e.

Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain during the recent crisis.

Using a large dataset of governance variables, we show a significantly better performance for firms with lower agency problems and more transparency.

Our results show that hiring a big-Six auditor is an important determinant of better performance.

We also show that firms paying dividends do better than those that do not.

Similarly, we illustrate that complexity of firm‟s operations negatively impacts its performance during the crisis period in view of the fact that it reflects less transparency about the firm‟s activities.

On the whole, we argue that better governance mechanisms help in building trust with investors and therefore allow firms to resist more in crisis periods.
