English Abstract

This study examined stigmatization by association by conducting in depth interviews with forty-nine health professionals responsible for providing care to HIV/AIDS patients in Morocco.

The data provided rich insights into the process of stigmatisation as experienced by nurses, doctors and social workers providing HIV care in Morocco.

Based on the data, a conceptual model of stigmatization by association was developed, that includes five different processes that influence professionals’ vulnerability to HIV stigmatization by association namely, interactions with patients, interactions with other health professionals, interactions with friends and family, interactions with the general public and interactions with faith/Islam.

Findings suggest that each of these different interactions can serve to reinforce or reduce a sense of stigmatization for HIV carers and as such offer a theoretical foundation for developing strategies to reduce stigmatization by association.
