English Abstract

The main purpose of this research paper is to clarify the sensitivity of stock returns in regard to distress risk and book to market equity.

In this sense, Ohlson’s O-Score as a measure of distress risk revealed that firms with higher distress risk and B/M ratio tend to be more profitable.

In addition, low B/M ratio firms display, in part, the same probabilities of distress risk as those of high B/M ratios.

Besides, within the low B/M ratio groups, firms with low O-score display the lowest mean of B/M ratio.

Moreover, the outcomes concluded that the B/M ratio increases as the probability of bankruptcy get higher.

More importantly, our results concluded that low B/M ratio firms have the highest 12 and 36-month prior returns, and O-Score has a negative correlation with 36-month prior returns.
