Abstract EN
Eighty male Nile Catfish (Clarias lazera) were used to study the effect of contaminated rearing water with lead acetate.
Control and three levels of sublethal concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 20 ppm) were added in the rearing water for 8 weeks.
Liver and muscle were taken to determine lead concentration.
Blood samples were collected every 2 weeks to determine the serum lead level and biochemical analysis.
The results of this experiment confirmed that the liver of fish understudy tend to accumulate the highest concentration of lead followed by muscles and serum.
There was a highly significant increase in total lipids, total cholesterol, and LDL-C, triacylglycerol, and MDA and cholinesterase activity in the sera of experimental fish.
Meanwhile HDL-C, lipase and G-S-T activities were significantly reduced.
These results suggest that lead affects the lipid metabolism of the fish and this may reduce the ability of the fish to maturation, since lipids are known to play an important role in fish Production and reproduction as an energy source and a precursor of steroids
