Aflatoxins in dairy animal feeds and their residues in milk

A survey on feed or feed commodities samples from Egyptian dairy farms were done during a period from 2001 to 2002 for aflatoxin (AF) contamination.

The examined samples were 75 commercial processed animal feed (PAF) (cotton and lin seed cake), 50 yellow corn, 50 soybean meal and 25 wheat bran samples.

The total contamination % of all the surveyed samples was 47.5 % and the rate of contamination varied from 40 in yellow corn to 51 % in dairy PAF.

68 % of the total contaminated samples contained AFB1 less than 20 ppb.

27% of the examined samples had AFB1 below 200 ppb.

Only 4 samples (5 %) of imported yellow corn soybean were contaminated with AFB1 in quantity greater than 200 ppb.A dairy farm fed on ration naturally contaminated with AFB1 (120 ppb) with total daily intake of 1440, 1200, and 960 ppb / cow daily.

A detectable levels of AFM1 excreted in milk in quantities of 0.889, 0.90, 0.91ppb of AFM1 respectively.

These amounts were representing 1.54, 1.2, and 0.858 % of the total daily ingested amount of the parent toxin.
