English Abstract

Recent and remarkable efforts have been made by the Moroccan government to go encourage Islamic banking system because it is expected to be an important attempt to improve the Moroccan economic development.

For this reason, it has become necessary to assess Moroccans’ the level of awareness, perceptions, and attitudes towards Islamic banking products and services and the factors affecting them.

More precisely, this study is for objective to examine the effect of, religious motives, government support, awareness, advertising efforts, switching costs, and relatives’ recommendations on Moroccans’ willingness to adopt Islamic type of financing.

Conclusions will help assess to which extent the Islamic banking system has an opportunity for development and growth in Morocco.A sample of 309 respondents from different cities in Morocco was surveyed to achieve those objectives.

Binary logistic regression was applied.

Results showed that religious motives, government support, advertising efforts, and relatives’ recommendations are statistically significant and do impact Moroccans’ attitude towards Islamic banking products and services.

Findings also showed that most of Moroccans are aware of the existence of the Islamic banking system;yet it was clearly observed that there is a serious lack of awareness of how these Islamic banks workeven though most of respondents were Muslims.

However, it can be concluded that Islamic banks are expected to have a prominent position in the banking sector in Morocco since most of Moroccans showed their willingness to use Islamic banking solutions.

Finally, the current results are of key importance in informing future banks in Morocco.
