English Abstract

Relying on the Worldwide Governance Index provided by the World Bank, the aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of institutional quality on organizational performance.

For that purpose, a panel data approach is used for a sample of 176 companies representing 35 countries to conduct an empirical analysis of the effects of institutions on firms’ performance.

Data was gathered for a six year period (2006 to 2011).The paper attempts to merge country level data and firm level data to search for any link between the variables.

In order to capture organizational performance, different dimensions are considered in this research.

The theoretical framework used to assess the effect of institutional quality on performance is the industrial organization (IO) theory by introducing the institutional quality index as an intermediary input to the production function.

The IO theory attempts to find links between organizations and the marketplace.

Results from multivariate regression showed that institutional quality significantly affects three dimensions of firms’ performance: financial, operational, and overall.
