Abstract EN

The effect of topical application of aloe oil (A.O.)on mancozeb and mancozeb + croton oil induced skin tumors in BALB/c mice was investigated.

Our results emphasize the inhibitory effect of A.O.

on the carcinogenic effect of mancozeb fungicide and mancozeb + croton oil.

Skin papillomas were induced by topical application of mancozeb (100mg/kg b.w.) in 0.1ml of dimethyl sulfoxide 3 times per week for 30 weeks.

Skin papillomas and carcinomas were induced by topical application of 100mg mancozeb /kg b.w.

as initiator (on days 1 and 8) followed by topical application of 0.5mg croton oil in 0.2ml acetone, twice weekly until the end of the experiment (30 weeks).

Our results showed that the application of A.O.

decreased the appearance of skin papillomas in mice treated with mancozeb at a percentage of 90%.

Painting the mouse skin with A.O.

in mancozeb + C.O.

group decreased the appearance of skin papillomas and skin carcinomas at a percentage of 79.7%.

The application of Chi-square test on the data of mice survival and death; the number of mice developing skin tumors and the number of mice developing no tumors, and the number of mice bearing skin papillomas and the number of mice bearing skin carcinomas were statistically significant(P<0.05).

The results of this study suggest that aloe oil (A.O.) possesses an inhibitory effect when topically applied against mancozeb and mancozeb+croton oil (C.O.)-induced skin tumorigenesis in mice.
