English Abstract

In the last few years^ Quality of Service (Qo5) provisioning has become ^n increasingly relevant and chall^^nging issue in Wireless Networks such as the 1ممآ€^1^لا MobiJe Telecommunication System (UMTS), especially ^th th^ ever growing need for multimedia ser\'ices that r^uire guaranteed quality ؛٥ service such as the hit rate^ the delay, ar^d the bit error rate (BER).

Therefore^ QoS adaptation algorithms are needed to cope W'ith the Inherent 1ألخل degradation due to the interference-limited nature of the Wideband ^ode Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), being the UMTS multiple access method/ even when close to optimal schedulers 3هآل admission control systems are us^d.

In this respect, the mai^ of focus of the thesis is three-fold1 ؛، to suggest two novel cost driven and W^DMA QoS a٦٧aأe adaptation algorithms: the Dynamic Qo$ Adaptation AJgorithm (DQAA) ؛or cop}Tng with the 1ااءآ< degradation ill tlie WCDMA radio access, and the Event Driven QoS Adapt؛؛^n Algorithm (EDQAA) for prioritizing the soft handoffs (SHO), 2.

to b^ild a testbed for the evalua^on of QoS adapta^on in WCDMA based third generation wireless network: UMTS and 3, to test using this testbed the performance of t١لe suggested DQAA and EDQAiA against a Basic Algorithm (^A) and no prioritization for the SHO.
