English Abstract

Developing faster computers is not merely for the sake of convenience.

Faster computers imply solving large and complex problems and finding solutions quicker.

All of this can be done at high levels of accuracy with a very low cost: a competitive advantage pursued by many in the industry and academia.

For example, insurance companies hope to reduce time-to-market so as to have the competitive advantage.

In science and academia, solving complex problems faster and with higher accuracy yields more valuable results and increases the research‘s contribution value, giving them an edge in the race to publish.

High performance computing clusters have unleashed a whole new approach to harnessing computational power.

High performance computing clusters are, nowadays, used in weather forecasting, model simulation (astronomy, geology, molecular dynamics, risk assessment, financial projections, etc), and solving computationally expensive calculations.

This project presents the importance and effectiveness of a high performance computing cluster in an academic environment, Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI), through demonstrating the ease of cluster installation and the increased performance gained from it by studying the added value through using Multiple Sequence Alignment and Option Pricing as two main applications.
