English Abstract
Information Retrieval techniques were developed mainly for the English language and later for other languages, except the Arabic language.
This work addresses the main and basic issues in the development of an Arabic Information Retrieval System.
Firstly Arabic word and character frequency distributions were studied, Zipfs law as well as Luhn’s observation were verified for 100 MB of Arabic text.
Afterwards conflation problem was also investigated, and a stemming algorithm that deals with prefixes and suffixes, was designed.
Different experiments were conducted to test this algorithm, and improvements in retrieval measures were noticed.
This work demonstrates that IR methods can be adapted to the Arabic language, and encourages the use of Arabic documents in the new information society.
