English Abstract

Our qualitative and quantitative studies show that users cannot transfer skills related to creation and editing tasks when they change applications or versions of the same application.

They constantly need to relearn how to perform tasks for the sake of using different tools.

Users cannot reveal their intentions to the tools and these tools cannot interpret these intentions correctly.

Users are also frustrated when they cannot understand the model on which the application is based.

Co-adaptive instruments are novel tools that aim at establishing a sustainable partnership between humans and computers through building a set of skills users can maintain in time and across several applications.

This type of tools is accessible, intuitive and incrementally learnable.

They are also based on three design principles: reification, polymorphism and reuse.

Color is one of the properties users manipulate for various types of objects in a large number of applications.

At the same time, this property relates to several rules and theories that manage the choice of one or a theme of colors.

Users are not always aware of these rules and of the way in which a given tool represents and incorporates these rules into a given visualization.

This often leads to frustration if the user does not understand the model and structure behind the tool’s actions.

We use the definition and properties of co-adaptive instruments to compare three novel color tools.

We explain how these tools have certain aspects of co-adaptive instruments and we point out at the same time elements that need enhancement.
