English Abstract
The aim of this project is to design and implement a softphone, similar to Skype, called SIPTalk for personal digital assistants (PDAs) that support Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and newer versions.
SIPTalk will provide several features to the users including instant messaging, presence, active phone book, file sharing, profile management, tracking and making calls.
A user would be able to call other peers or a PSTN phone numbers with two options: to pay for the call or make a free one after watching the sponsors’ advertisements.
SIPTalk will serve as a brick in the construction of a larger project that aims to implement Next Generation Networks (NGN) and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture.
The designed softphone will conform to the current Voice over IP (VoIP) standards by using SIP as the session signaling protocol and RTP as the transportation protocol for the voice streaming.
The project has also necessitated, in addition to the implementation of a SIP user agent, porting an existing implementation of RTP from C to .NET Compact Framework.
Thus, interoperability with Java based softphones and existing SIP proxies is an important issue since the mobile device has limited capabilities and resources.
