English Abstract

The Medicus project aims at bviilding a prototype for a mobile medical information system using smart cards.

The Medicus prototype focuses on providing enhanced security and allowing automatic synchronization of history update between the patient's card and the back-end information system.

The Medicus system is based on Java card, Public Key Infrastructure and Internet technologies and offers a collection of services: 1.

Terminal/Card authentication.

2.

HealthCare personnel authentication using security credentials.

3.

Quick and controlled access to critical medical records (blood type, allergies, next of kin, ciorrent medications, etc.) 4.

Secure access to heavy medical information (X-rays, MRI, medical history, voice recording, DNA footprint, etc.).

5.

Automatic History updates.

These services are to be collocated with the Campus system’s services.

A strategic decision has been made to use standard components and protocols such as HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol), PJCI (Public Key Infrastructure), OpenSSL (Open Secme Socket Layer), JSSE (Java Secure Socket Extension), JDBC (Java Database Connectivity), PCSC (Personal Computer / Smart Card) and PKCS#11 (Public Key Cryptography Standard #11), for the development of modules and services.

This report describes the design pattems, the distributed software architecture and the implemented/integrated components of the Medicus prototype
