English Abstract

Today, an increasing number of operators, especially those with newly obtained licenses, are turning to the WiMAX technology.

This technology facilitates broadband access across large areas and provides one of the best options of a quick investment.

Deploying fixed WiMAX solutions, also known as 802.16d solutions, requires determining the most appropriate position and parameters of the hardware used.

Given that it is highly expensive to physically test all possible wireless network configurations, a need for a network planning software tool becomes necessary.

The aim of this project was to validate and enhance the propagation models used for coverage prediction of an already existing WiMAX planning tool.

A real and deployed network was used as a test case for the tool.

Drive tests were performed also to complete the research.

The WiMAX Planning Tool was even compared with the commonly used commercial software that supports telecom providers on their RF planning projects.

All this, allowed not only an analysis of the simulation points by dealing with Non Line of Sight and Line of Sight points and evaluating their corresponding propagation models, but also taking into account Obstructed Line of Sight points and providing methods for estimating the excess path loss.
