English Abstract

In recent years, the network market and wireless applications have been changed dramatically.

From this observation, a new architecture has emerged: the wireless sensor networks.

This type of network is the result of two poles of modern computing: embedded systems and wireless communications.

However, many obstacles inherent in their specific features should be overcome before they reach maturity.

Among these obstacles, the problem of security must be solved appropriately and in accordance with the special characteristics of WSNs.

The energy limitation in this type of wireless sensors and the environments in which they could be deployed, are factors that make such networks highly vulnerable.

The lack of physical security for this type of sensors, and the vulnerable nature of radio communications are characteristics that increase the risk of attacks on such networks.

In this final project work, we have designed and implemented a solution that provides the most suitable security services for WSNs.

Our main goal is the querying and the dissemination of data collected by a network of wireless sensors in a secure way.

The provided security services: integrity control, authentication, confidentiality , and anti-replay of sensor data, are based on a novel secure directed tree routing algorithm using a symmetric key solution.

Finally, to validate our approach, we have implemented two of the most powerful attacks against WSNs (DoS, Blackhole) in order to observe the behavior of our solution facing a real threat; Moreover, the performance of our solution (energy consumption) was evaluated with a small simulation of 240 nodes and gave as a result 5% of security overhead in the total energy consumed.

This is about 20% less than SPINS protocol security overhead [42].

Therefore, our algorithm aims to perform its task while ensuring energy saving which is a very critical resource that the WSN lifetime depends mainly on.
