English Abstract
As a first step towards building H.323-aware wireless base stations capable for supporting multimedia applications with guaranteed QoS and hence a strong multimedia-aware wireless environment.
Therefore a thorough imderstanding of the effects of wireless link degradation on transmission of MPEG video is required.
This project examines the effect of wireless link degradation on transmission of Moving Picture Expert group (MPEG) video.
The radio interface of this wireless link is characterized by varies type of errors due to the following factors: 1- random losses, 2- intrinsic errors from noisy chaimel, 3- network congestion, 4- handover.
In addition, there are problems related to the periodic peak at MPEG bit rate due to the different compression techniques on consecutive pictures (Intraframe I pictures and Interframe P and B pictures).
We present a study of the effect of these types of errors on both quantitative performance metrics (such as jitter, packet loss and latency) and qualitative metrics (such User Perceived Quality of Service) in normal packet and on packet which hold a specific picture type.
Our investigation includes the effect of fading (both fast fading and slow fading), out of order packets, packet loss, and delay.
To this end we have developed a platform to sniff packets holding the MPEG video, imwrap real time protocol (RTP), real time control protocol (RTCP), and MPEG packet header, and inject errors in MPEG data.
In addition, we have developed a graphical user interface (GUI) to control the error injection.
The results of this investigation are presented in this report.
