English Abstract

Sybil attack is one of the serious attacks to Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET).

In a Sybil attack, a malicious node illegitimately claims multiple identities and simultaneously exploits these fake identities, in order to disturb the functionality of the VANET by disseminating false information.

In the presence of Sybil attack any attack can be launched, threatening the lives of drivers and passengers.

This research provides a comprehensive review and comparison of the different techniques that have been proposed in the literature and a performance evaluation for two selected schemes, Privacy-Preserving Detection of Abuses of pseudonyms (P2DAP) and footprint.

These two schemes are in the same class that depends on encryption and authentication.

In the encryption and authentication methods, Sybil attack detection is based on the authentication mechanism and public key cryptography.

They are selected because the authors developed their schemes using the position verification class which is relies on the nodes position and that each position is associated with only one identity.

P2DAP depends on hashing pseudonyms, and footprint depends on series of certificates.

A xii performance evaluation has been performed using ns2 simulator, depending on several parameters number of nodes, speed and number of attackers.

The results show that P2DAP perform better when the number of nodes increases and footprint perform better in highways environment therefore there is no adequate solution for all streets kinds, the good solution must be selected according to the nature of the street.
