Study of piston ring dynamics during operation of a diesel engine

Abstract EN

In internal combustion engines,piston rings play an important role on the performance and endurance of the engine ,i.e sealing combustion chamber, controlling the lubricating oil as well as working as heat flow passage from the piston into the cylinder.

This paper studies and describes the physical basics of ring movement under dynamic loading conditions.

The results were found to be inline with those of other researches' .A Zetor engine type was used in this work.

The experimental work shows the pressure indicator diagram at different engine speeds and for different piston ring wears.

A complete mathematical model's constructed in order to evaluate the dynamic forces acting on the first and second ring and their relation to the ring motion by using real engine parameters.

Pressure distribution was used for calculating pressure distribution in the crevices region on and behind piston ring.

The results of the present work yielded the force distribution on the piston rings.

They also show that there is a significant effect of piston ring dynamics on inter-ring pressure distribution and on dynamic forces sustained by piston rings during engine operation.
