I would like in this paper to highlight the relationship between democracy as a most viable and inclusive form of government, and education as an essential tool for the possibility of a genuine democracy.
I will begin by John Dewey’s conception of the values of liberal democracy, individuality, freedom and self-realization.
It is worth to mention that Dewey has overcome the Classical Liberalism or the Old Individualism that confined freedom to the absence of external constraints on the individual’s ability to pursue his chosen goals, arguing that freedom consists in the positive fact of individual‘s participation in the well organization of community life.
Besides, virtues of democracy need education to be rooted and maintained in society’s mind and individual’s behaviour, for that reason the school is a social institution through which social reform should be achieved.
But before highlighting the principles of the progressive education, Dewey points out to the principal weaknesses of the traditional education which was not concerned with students actual learning experiences and did not attach importance to the scientific method as the best means to achieve democracy
