Abstract EN

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the philosophical vision of the contemporary German philosopher and literary critic Walter Benjamin (1892- 1940), who is one of the major representatives of critical theory.

He is considered today among the most important philosophers and thinkers in the Western world in general and in Germany in particular.

The main topic of this paper is to clarify the relationship between this vision and its philosophical and religious roots within philosophical and historical context carrying the worries and anxieties of the era.

However, this study is limited to the analysis of the concept of the movement of history, and the possibility of changing its course, so that humanity can achieve happiness and freedom.

In fact it is not easy to understand Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of history without sketching the philosophical and religious sources that contributed to the founding and the framing of this philosophy that is marked by ambiguity and complexity.

His theses on ‘The Concept of History’ (1940), which expresses his philosophy of history, is considered by the specialists of philosophy as the most significant document since the publication of Marx’s theses on Feuerbach.

Besides, it is considered ad an important document because it tries to overcome Hegel’s metaphysics of history, and rejects some Marxist orthodox readings, especially after Walter Benjamin’s deception by Stalinism.
