Oil palm shell (OPS) was examined for preparation of activated carbon using potassium hydroxide as chemical agent.
The characterisations of the oil palm shell activated carbon by potassium hydroxide (OPSACKOH) were studied using different techniques.
The high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, the total volume of pore and the average pore diameter were equal to 1614 m2/g, 0.57cm3/g and 2.2 nm, respectively.
The functional groups and surface morphology of the OPSAC was determined by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.
Proximate analysis of the OPS activated carbon by potassium hydroxide were 7.28, 69.88, 20.29 and 2.54% for volatile matter, fixed carbon, moisture, and ash, respectively.
Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis of OPSAC-KOH showed the high carbon content with 89.53 wt %.
