Water pumping using solar energy

The experimental investigation was carried out on a rig especially prepared to perform the study at residential area in city of Erbil to find out the amount of water could be lifted from the ground floor to a static head of 8 meters over the roof using two modules of 50 W photovoltaic solar module, the system contains in addition to photovoltaic panels, AC centrifugal pump, inverter, charging control and an 88 Ah battery for energy saving.

The electricity generation has many difficulties in our area and it is essential to look after alternative methods that could be used to lift water to upstairs and then reusing it later in the day or at night.

The solar energy is the best solution as there is about 250 clear days during the year in Erbil city.

The experimental results show that the maximum energy production(solar insolation) in Erbil city is about 900 W.h/m2.day for PV module positioned toward south at a tilt angle of 36o.

The maximum volume of water lifted was 610 litter/day in June and the minimum volume (350 lit/day) of water was lifted in January.
