English Abstract

recent years there is a growing trend in distribution utilities to compensate for system losses and improve total system efficiency.

Installation and operation of renewable energy (RE) units is one of the regulators’ policies to reduce system losses and improve system efficiency.

Photovoltaic (PV) is expected to play a key role in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors of the power system.

PV provides an alternative to the traditional electricity sources i.e.

oil, gas, coal, water etc.

and can also be used to enhance the current electrical system.

In this research, the possibility of having a PV System to compensate for the Distribution Network Losses on Gore Al-Safi is assessed.

But, first the medium voltage (MV) losses for the selected feeder, using energy meter readings for three consecutive years were calculated, second, the solar energy resource’s availability on the feeder site was defined, and third, a PV system able to compensate and carry out all MV system losses was designed.

The assessment results indicated that average daily solar radiation on a horizontal surface is 5.5 kW/m2.day and the yearly Gore Al-safe medium voltage losses was 1895 MWh.

Further, the number of PV modules is 3504 PV modules with 5 inverters needed to cover up all MV losses.
