Aphoristic sentences in selected poems of Al-Mutanabbi

Aphoristic sentences are irregular sentences that can be found in many proverbs .

Their common structural feature is the balancing of two equivalent constructions against each other (e.g.

Easy come , easy go) .

The two constructions of an aphorism can be classified in terms of one or more of the following types: (elliptical , conditional , imperatives , ' no --- no ' model , verbless or anomalous and proportional ) .

This paper is devoted to the application of Quirk et al.'s ( 1985 ) syntactic classifications of aphoristic sentences on some poetic aphorisms in some of Al-Mutanabbi's poems .

It is also an attempt to settle the problem of the mystery of these sentences for the rare use of a specific heading for the syntactic study of these constructions in Arabic.

The present paper falls into six sections : the first is an introduction of the study , the second highlights ' aphorism ' in general , the third defines and illustrates Quirk et al.'s types of aphoristic sentences , the fourth is the literature written about aphorism in Al-Mutanabbi's poetry , the fifth includes a practical syntactic study of thirty quotations ( i.e.

one hundred and ten lines ) from " Introducing Al-Mutanabbi " by Dr.

Ibrahim Mumayiz ( 1977 ) , and finally , the sixth is the conclusions.
