Abstract EN

Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent psychological disorders in cancer patients.

Because of the difficulty of diagnosis, most cases remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Our study aimed to assess the psychological status of Syrian cancer patients.

We included 72 individuals: 24 breast cancer patients, 24 lung cancer patients and 24 healthy subjects.

Psychological status was assessed by the Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS).

Serum TNF-αlpha concentrations were determined using an enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA).

The serum TNF-α concentrations were higher in cancer patients and patients’ group with a combination of severe anxiety and depression, than the control group.

We found a positive association between anxiety and depression scores and serum levels of TNF-α, which suggest that TNF-α is involved in the pathophysiology, and could be used as a assistant marker.

Also, there was high prevalence of depression and anxiety among Syrian breast and lung cancer patients, which emphasizes the importance of the diagnosis and following those patients, by using HADS questionnaire and serum TNF-α levels.
