English Abstract

The present study offers a critical analysis of the twentiethcentury patriarchal stereotypes of women in F.

Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925), Hemingway’s The Sun also Rises (1926), and Nella Larsen’s Quicksand (1928).

It also examines the status of women in relation to social class, sexuality, race and identity.

The study will be divided into introduction, three chapters and conclusion.

The introduction introduces the historical movement of the feminist theory which deals with issues of women rights.

The first chapter analyzes the commodification of women in Fitzgerald’s novel through highlighting patriarchal oppression system of the twentieth century which uses social class as a means to help men use their power and dominance over women.

The second chapter analyzes the sexual oppression of women through highlighting the patriarchal stereotypes about women in Ernest Hemingway’s novel.

Chapter three provides an analysis about the representation of African American woman, racism, and identity in Nella Larsen’s novel.

In addition, it gives some details about the social conditions of African American women in the early twentieth century.

Finally, a conclusion contains a summary of the study.

The approach used in this research is both feminist and Marxist in its analysis of women’s portrayal in three novels in the twentieth-century American novel.
