In coordination, the presence of an empty element that does not correspond to a syntactic constituent results from phonetic ellipsis or non-realization of such an element from the second conjunct while s^mtactic structure remains unaffected.

Ellipsis simply means the absence of PF information in the presence of syntactic structure.

In Qur?anic Arabic, the real shared constitoents may come to occupy a position between the two co^uncts but some other seemingly shared constituents occupying the same position undergo ellipsis as illustrated by the following examples:
