English Abstract

Construction have major impact on three element of sustainability development, namely economic growth, social progress and environmental ability.

Building project is an important issue in the construction projects due to sustainable development specially at the design stage which is the early stage of the project lifecycle.

The research aimed to assess implementation of sustainable design in construction projects in Gaza Strip.

The methodology adopted to achieve the research aims based on a questionnaire survey that conducted to investigate the level of awareness, knowledge, behavior and implementation of sustainable design among designer engineers and develop a framework according to relationship between indices measured through survey, which is a way of supporting the decision makers.

The survey also defines the most important challenge that face the implementation of sustainable design in Gaza Strip and the most applicable sustainability indicator that could be implemented in Gaza Strip.

one hundred and thirty questionnaires were distributed to the designer engineers and one hundred and twenty five questionnaires were received.

The data collected were analyzed with the aid of statistical package for social science (SPSS version 22).

The results indicate that there is a gap between culture and implementation of the sustainable design.

the designer engineers haven‘t a good culture about sustainability concept and still at the early stage of awareness, knowledge and behavior toward sustainability, but the designer engineers seemed to be able to implement the sustainable design in their work and the implementation of sustainable design seemed to be not completely strange for them, which interrupted by the Gaza strip situation and crises.

The research also show that there is many challenge that face the implementation of sustainable design in Gaza strip such as lake of awareness, motivation, education, training and financing support, furthermore the designer engineer need extra time to incorporate sustainability concept in there design.

A framework was developed to show the factors which effect on the implementation of sustainable design based on the research hypotheses that measured the relationship between the implementation of sustainable design and other factors.

The recommendation of this research that there is essential need to improve the knowledge of the designer engineer about sustainable design, and develop strategy that could help the decision makers to promote the designer engineer to incorporate sustainable design through the design stage of building projects.
