Abstract EN

This study is a an attempt to investigate the influence or a number or communitys factors and variables in the behavior or electorate, in the State of Kuwait, from the points of view of the students of Kuwait University.

The study was conducted during the first semester of the academic year 2010 on a sample of 596 students from both sexes and from various colleges at Kuwait University.

A Purposeful stratified sample was selected while maintaining equal proportions between male and female students and between science and art faculties.

A validated questionnaire was designed to include a series of questions about the determinants or electoral behavior of Kuwaitis from the students' point of view.

Some of the most important results of the study show significant impact of tribalism and sectarianism on the electoral behavior of voters.

The study also shows the weak influence of democratic factors represented in national values and political electoral programs of voters.

Furthermore, the study reveals how important is the moral integrity variable, and its role in influencing the voters' behavior.

The study comes out with several recommendations and proposals: the most important one is to enhance the political awareness of Kuwaiti voters, and to work on the traditional tribal and sectarian factors in favour of democracy and substantive factors represented in electoral programs, national policies and the moral characteristics of the candidates.

The study also recommends the establishment of a research center in the field of political development in order to raise the cultural and scientific standard of the society in the area of political life, and in the area of public and parliamentary elections in the State of Kuwait.
