Nickel-Chromium alloys electrodeposition is important for the production of anti-wear and anti-corrosion coatings.
It has been carried out over 50 years using essentially the same technology based on aqueous solutions.
The toxicity of the electrolyte makes the search for an alternative process an environmental imputative.
Electrodeposition of wt 70 % Ni, and wt 30% Cr alloys in choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG) based deep eutectic solvent have been carried out on mild-steel substrates.
It was found that metallic deposits containing Ni and Cr could be deposited from a deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing wt 70 % NiCl2·6H2O, and wt 30% CrCl3·6H2O.
Such a deposition, could be used as an inexpensive substitute to parts entirely fabricated from costly stainless steel.
The physical properties such as: conductivity, viscosity current efficiency and voltammogram have been investigated for this system.
The deposition exhibits micro cracking or no cracking at all.
This system possesses relatively high current efficiency and harder coating than the mild steel substrate.
