English Abstract

This thesis describes a novel design topology of a 24Gbps Continuous Time Linear Equalizer (CTLE) for a CMOS Front-End receiver.

The proposed CTLE circuit consists of two blocks of equalization circuits.

The first block is a first order passive boost circuit that provides an amplitude boost, and also increases the frequency where the boost takes place.

The second block is a two stage active circuit that includes four inductors in the output stage.

In simulations, the proposed CTLE provides a boost of around 14 dB at a data rate of 24Gbps.

The design was tested by applying a sinusoidal signal to the input of the channel.

Then, the signal passes the modeled channel to the proposed CTLE circuit.

The design was tested on all process corners and on different temperatures, showing a magnitude boost of the signal at the frequency of interest.

This CTLE is designed and verified using equations modeled in MATLAB, in addition to HSPICE circuits’ simulations leveraging state-of-the-art Synopsys Custom Designer tools in 28nm CMOS technology.
