Abstract EN

This study at estimating the production cost function of fresh water fish farming in Riyadh and Makkah Regions, Saudi Arabia using econometric analysis.

Results indicated that: (1) Total production cost was estimated at SR 52800/donum (1000 square meters).

(2) Running costs ranked first among the cost structure being (81.32%) of the total production cost compared to 18.68% for fixed costs.

(3) Average actual production was 153.3 tons/farm, whereas marginal cost was SR 11900 /ton, while average total cost was SR 16800 /ton.

(4) Cost elasticity was estimated at 0.71.

(5) Average optimum production was estimated at 527.3 tons, which is greater than the average actual production by 374 tons and valued at SR 5.25 million at an average sale price of SR 14050 /ton.

(6) Profit maximizing output was estimated at 578.6 tons/farm, which is greater than the profit maximizing output by 425.26 tons and valued at SR 5.975 million.

(7) The minimum price accepted by fish farmers was estimated at SR 11800 /ton, meaning that farmers will continue in business as long as the average sale price equals or greater than the minimum average variable cost.

(8) Supply price elasticity for fresh water fish was low in Riyadh and Makkah due to short run risk and uncertainty involved with fish farming.(9) This study recommends the need to increase the production of fresh water fish farming projects at Riyadh and makkah regions, in order to move to economic production stage.
