Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The present study evaluated the protective effect of dietary administration of selenium (Se) as sodium selenite (0.05 and 0.1 g/kg diet) against a sub-lethal dose of cadmium (Cd) as cadmium chloride (0.310 g/kg diet) or mercury (Hg) as mercuric chloride (0.045 g/kg diet) or both of them to adult male albino rats for 6 weeks.
Cd and/or Hg caused decrease in body weight with an increase in liver and kidney relative weight in case of Cd and a decrease in liver relative weight in case of Hg or both of them.
Addition of Cd and/or Hg caused a highly significant decrease in the blood hemoglobin (Hb), a highly significant increase in lipid peroxidation in liver, expressed as malondialdehyde (MDA) and a highly significant decrease in antioxidant status expressed as liver reduced glutathione (GSH).
Liver injury was indicated by significant elevation in serum alanine and aspartate aminotransferases (ALT, AST).
Kidney injury was indicated by significant increase in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine.
The administration of Se caused significant decrease in liver MDA and a significant increase in GSH.
It also caused a continuous increase in Hb ratio except when rats were given Se in combination with Cd.
ALT, AST, BUN and serum creatinine were decreased significantly when Se was added to the diets containing the heavy metals.
Histopathological results showed hepatic cellular infiltration and degeneration in rats administered Cd and/or Hg, while addition of Se with the heavy metals caused a marked improvement of the hepatic architecture.
