English Abstract

This research aims at conducting evaluations of the quality for site investigations related to residential buildings in Jordan.

Methodology applied in this research comprises four phases: The first phase focused on identifying factors, methods, and literature review of the international standards in implementing site investigations.

The second phase concentrated on designing a survey questionnaire regarding attitudes for performing site investigations in Jordan (in accordance with the international standards), and then distributing it to several engineers and experts working at site investigation offices.

The next phase for the research methodology was the analysis of the collected data (resulted from the distributed questionnaire) using SPSS program.

Finally, the last phase of this research focused on developing guidelines and preparing conclusions and recommendations.

Based on the analysis of the field survey, the results indicated that various factors affect the quality of site investigations conducted in Jordan.

It was concluded that the most important parameter was the lack of commitment to comply with the requirements of the Jordanian Code of Site Investigation, in addition to the lack of commitment to carryout field and laboratory tests based on the latest standards (specifications).

Among other parameters, lack of interest to plan for the time needed to conduct the required investigation is one of the significant results.

Also, the conclusions indicated that the site investigation reports don’t contain detailed descriptions of geological profiles that derived from boreholes.

In addition, these reports contain very limited information regarding the existence of water table or other sources of ground water, and also there is a lack of data regarding a review of the engineering history of the existed neighboring constructions.

Therefore, all the above factors affected the level of performance of conducting site investigations for residential buildings in Jordan.

Accordingly, it was recommended that site investigation offices should accurately perform the Jordanian site investigation code for the purpose of raising the level of performance and quality of their products.

This may be one of the responsibilities of the Jordan Engineers Association to enforce compliance with the requirements.

It is also recommended that site investigations offices should review and update the engineering specifications of the field and laboratory tests in order to upgrade their performance towards the international standards.
