English Abstract

Importance of Information and communication technology (ICT) has been shown in many sectors.

The project management is one of these sectors which integrate ICT to enhance the project management performance among all kinds of projects.

One of the major reasons is that Projects are now incorporating more participants and these participants are often quite geographically separated, the communication and the transfer of project information on projects sites are becoming increasingly complicated.

With the development of the Internet and the web services standards, open source technologies is a desirable computing model to support design and implement new functions according to the project management requirements due to its flexibility.

In recent years, many researchers have investigated automated progress tracking for construction projects.

These efforts concentrate on laser scanners and radio frequency identification (RFID) but it is still a lot of construction activities can’t be scanned using the mentioned technologies and for this reason the project managers can’t get updates about all actual project activities progress.

This thesis demonstrates how the modified open source web based project management system (WPMS) can improve the efficiency of project management by uploading photos of project activities progress using site engineer’s mobile devices and allowing the project managers to control the projects and to make decisions without delay.

A framework was developed to illustrate how uploading updated photos about project activities at regular times provides project managers with near real time updates about project activities progress and a questioner and an illustrative scenario were adopted for the validation of the framework.

Keywords: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Web- based project management system (WPMS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
