English Abstract

This research provides an overview of utilization of RFID in the construction site management and identifies the benefits of RFID.

It is observed that while RFID is still not fully adapted in construction industry, research studies are being performed in various application areas in construction supply chains, mostly for material tracking.

Many benefits, such as time savings and improvements in productivity, are determined for specific construction activities in the previous studies.

Three main cases of different RFID applications were investigated in construction sites.

First one is about localization process of equipment’s spare parts; two systems were proposed to override the problem of finding the required spare parts in timely manner.

Second case was tracking and quantity take off problem of pipes and fittings of water treatment plant construction project, RFID tags integrated with GPS proposed to solve the problem of identifying the pipes and fittings during the installation and maintenance.

In the third case, simulation and site trials of an RFID system was adopted, The results of the simulation models in the case study and filed experiments showed that integrating RFID in the investigated construction site management enabled efficient material tracking and eliminated the current inefficiencies.

Time was saved in operational activities by integrating RFID in the investigated supply chain.

Also, the total cost saving corresponds to the 8.7 % of the total cost of the entire selected supply chain part of 982 windows.

Based on the benefits of using RFID management system, a managerial solution to change the process of current supply chain was suggested.

The expected saving result of the suggested managerial solution is about 72,000 $.
