English Abstract
In this research, the evaluation of conducting the idea of gabion wall technique to be used for the major structure of stadium ( Penta football) constructions has been investigated.
In addition, design and engineering management analyses for this technique compared with the other traditional technique (i.e., using reinforced concrete elements) have also been studied during this research.
In general, the gabion retaining walls are designed as gravity retaining walls that resist the lateral earth pressure due to their own weight.
The main forces acting on the retaining walls are lateral earth pressure, the vertical pressure of the weight of gabions, vehicular or seismic loads (if any).
To ensure the stability and durability of any retaining wall, the above forces should be taken into consideration in the design of the structure.
Common practice is to use the reinforced concrete elements in the design of structures including stadiums.
However, there is a need to find an alternative design complying with global standards and has a similar level of performance using low cost and available materials.
In order to achieve the main objectives of this research, the following stages were mainly considered: Design of traditional stadiums using reinforced concrete elements; Design of new stadiums using the idea of a gabion retaining wall; Performing engineering management analyses concerning the cost of materials, labors, equipment, and duration of carrying out the project for each type of the above stadiums.
Out of the above comparisons and analyses in regards to the cost and duration of implementation, it was concluded that the cost of constructing stadiums using the gabion alternative was less than the cost of the other traditional alternative (reinforced concrete) with about 30%.
In addition, the time required to construct the first alternative was less than the second one with about 50%.
Furthermore, it was indicated that the maintenance works required for the gabion alternative might be less than those for the traditional one, and in general, the idea of gabion alternative was complying with international standards and could be characterized as low-cost and time-saving materials.
