English Abstract

In this research, a geotechnical and management investigations were conducted to make cost evaluation for adopting reinforced earth retaining structures in Jordan and compare this technology with conventional concrete retaining walls.

The first phase of this investigation (i.e., the geotechnical investigation) included engineering evaluations for the geological formations and structures existing at Al-Fuhais region which was regarded as a case study for this research.

This phase also included suggesting proposed alternatives (solutions) to be performed in the reconstruction of Al-Fuhais road that was affected by lateral earth pressure derived from the road traffic above its embankment.

However, this road is currently under process of expansion from one-lane two direction carriageway to double-lane two direction carriage way.

Accordingly, two alternatives were selected as the most appropriate and applicable for the study area, namely: reinforced concrete wall, and reinforced earth retaining wall.

Detailed design and drawings (for each of these selected alternatives) were implemented and presented for the purpose of entering into the second phase of investigation regarding this research.

The second phase of the investigation pertains to the management part of this research, in which the most suitable and applicable alternative was chosen depending on engineering comparisons between alternatives that considered the same engineering performance for them, the final cost of executing each project, the total construction duration for each, in addition to the development of work plan for the project.

The findings of this research showed that the reinforced earth retaining wall is the most suitable and applicable alternative compared with the proposed conventional reinforced concrete retaining wall.
