Abstract EN

Rapid developments in communication technology and the Internet helped in the creation and development of the concept of Web Maps, especially if this type of maps is based on the modern techniques of information systems such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Such maps do not necessarily require the user’s familiarity with their technical underpinnings as much as the ability of effectively making and interacting with this type of maps.

On the other hand, these maps allow access to multiple sources of information and enable users to make full use of them, which made data and information exchange more effective.

Due to the current importance of these maps as well as their growing role in the future, this paper focuses on providing a review of web mapping in terms of their concept, types and issues, with specific attention to the GISbased web maps.

This work (in Arabic) should provide an early literary review of this important subject to Arab readers and researchers, since there is no such a reference to it as yet.
